St John Leonardi of Lucca

1 candle lit

John Leonardi was born in Lucca, Italy, in 1541 and died in Rome on 9 October 1609. As a priest he served the sick and the prisoners in hospitals and jails, and in 1579 he founded the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. He also set up a congregation of diocesan priests, confirmed by Pope Clement in 1595. St Philip Neri gave him lodging, along with the care of his cat. He is the patron saint of pharmacists. His feast is October 9. Light a free candle for those who care for the sick. St John, pray for us.
