St John I, pope and martyr
1 candle lit
St John I was a pope, born around 470. He led a delegation to the East at the order of the Arian ruler of Italy, who wanted harsh measures against Arians in the East eased. On his return the ruler imprisoned him at Ravenna, suspecting a plot linked to his friendship with an eastern rival. John died there in 526, apparently from his treatment in prison. His body was brought to Rome and buried in St Peter's Basilica. His feast is May 18. Light a free candle for those who suffer for matters they did not choose. St John I, pray for us.
