John Eudes was born in 1601 in Normandy, France, and became a priest known for preaching missions in parishes. In 1641 he founded the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity to shelter women who wished to begin a new life, and in 1643 the Congregation of Jesus and Mary, the Eudists, to train priests in seminaries. He spread devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. He died in Caen on August 19, 1680, and Pope Pius XI canonised him in 1925. His feast is August 19.
