St John Chrysostom, the Golden-Mouthed
1 candle lit
John was born in Antioch around 349 and served there as a priest for about twelve years before he was reluctantly made bishop of Constantinople. His name, Chrysostom, means golden-mouthed, and his sermons, some of which lasted two hours, urged the wealthy to share with the poor. He also criticized life at the royal court. The archbishop of Alexandria and the Empress Eudoxia drove him into exile, and he died in exile in 407. His feast is September 13. Light a free candle for preachers and speakers. St John Chrysostom, pray for us.
