St John Bosco, Priest and Teacher of Youth

1 candle lit

John Bosco (1815 to 1888), known as Don Bosco, was a priest in Turin who gave his life to poor and working boys. His work began when he prepared a poor orphan for Holy Communion. He opened the Oratory of St Francis de Sales, with workshops for shoemaking and tailoring and later a printing press, and by 1856 it held 150 boys. He taught that prayer, work, study and play belong together. In 1859 he founded the Salesians. His feast is January 31. Light a free candle for a young person finding their way. St John Bosco, pray for us.
