St John Baptist de la Salle, Patron of Teachers
1 candle lit
John Baptist de la Salle was born to a noble French family in 1651 and ordained a priest at 27. He could have lived comfortably as a canon of Reims, but a chance meeting led him to teach poor boys, and he gave away his fortune to do it. He founded the Brothers of the Christian Schools, who ran schools for the poor and opened a college to train teachers. Pope Pius XII named him patron of schoolteachers in 1950. His feast is April 7. Light a free candle for teachers and the children they teach. St John Baptist de la Salle, pray for us.
