St Jerome, Translator of the Bible
1 candle lit
Jerome was born around 345 in Stridon, in Dalmatia, studied in Rome and later served as secretary to Pope Damasus. He spent five years as a hermit in the desert of Chalcis, praying and studying, and then settled in Bethlehem, in the cave believed to be Christ's birthplace. There he translated most of the Old Testament from Hebrew into the Latin Bible known as the Vulgate. He was known for a bad temper and a sharp pen, and he died in 420. His feast is September 30. Light a free candle for librarians, scholars and translators. St Jerome, pray for us.
