St Isidore of Seville, Bishop and Scholar

Isidore was born around 560 into a family that gave the Church several saints. His elder brother Leander educated him, and Isidore became bishop of Seville after him. He lived when Arian Visigoths ruled beside Catholic Romans, and he helped Spain become a center of learning, calling for a seminary in every diocese. He wrote a dictionary, an encyclopedia and histories, and the encyclopedia served as a textbook for centuries. He died on April 4, 636. His feast is April 4.
