St Irenaeus of Lyons, Doctor of the Church

1 candle lit

Irenaeus was born in Asia Minor around the year 130 and became bishop of Lyons in what is now France. In his time, teachers called Gnostics offered secret knowledge that did not agree with the faith of the apostles. Irenaeus studied their teachings patiently and answered them in a five-book work, hoping to win his opponents, not only to prove them wrong. He died around 202. In 2022 Pope Francis named him a Doctor of the Church. His feast is June 28. Light a free candle for anyone seeking the truth with an open heart. St Irenaeus, pray for us.
