St Ignatius of Loyola, Founder of the Jesuits
1 candle lit
Ignatius was born in 1491 and dreamed of fame as a soldier, until a cannonball shattered his leg. While recovering he read a life of Christ and lives of the saints, and his heart turned toward God. At Manresa he began the Spiritual Exercises, a guide to prayer used on retreats. In 1534 he and six companions made their first vows, and Pope Paul III approved the Society of Jesus, with Ignatius as first general. He died in 1556. His feast is July 31. Light a free candle for anyone on retreat or discerning what God asks. St Ignatius, pray for us.
