St Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop and Martyr
1 candle lit
Ignatius was born in Syria and became bishop of Antioch. When the emperor Trajan visited Antioch around the year 107, Christians there were forced to choose between death and denying their faith, and Ignatius would not deny Christ. Condemned to die in Rome, he wrote seven letters on the way, to churches, to Polycarp of Smyrna and to the Christians of Rome. He called himself the wheat of the Lord. Tradition says wild beasts ended his life. His feast is October 17. Light a free candle for those who stay faithful under pressure. St Ignatius, pray for us.
