Hildegard was a Benedictine abbess, born in 1098 in Germany. She wrote down her visions at the request of her superior, taking ten years to complete her book Scivias, which means Know the Ways. She was also learned in medicine and poetry, and she composed music, including a sung play called Ordo Virtutum. She died on September 17, 1179, at Rupertsberg near Bingen. In 2012 Pope Benedict XVI named her a Doctor of the Church. Her feast is September 17. Light a free candle for musicians and artists. St Hildegard, pray for us.
