St Henry II, Holy Roman Emperor
1 candle lit
Henry II became king of Germany in 1002 and was crowned emperor in 1014. In 1007 he founded the diocese of Bamberg, built its cathedral and made the city a centre of the Church, and he and his wife, St Cunegund, are buried there. The couple had no children, and he stayed loyal to her throughout his life. He died on July 13, 1024. Pope Eugenius III canonised him in 1146, and Cunegund was canonised in 1200. His feast is July 13. Light a free candle for rulers and for married couples. St Henry, pray for us.
