St Hedwig of Silesia
1 candle lit
Hedwig married Henry the Bearded, Duke of Lower Silesia, and had six children. In 1202 she founded the Cistercian monastery of Trebnitz, and after her husband's death she joined it as a lay sister. She was known for generous charity to the poor. She wore secondhand clothes and worn shoes so that she would not stand out from them, saying that the poor are our masters. She died in 1243 and was declared a saint in 1267. Her feast is October 16. Light a free candle for the poor and for mothers. St Hedwig, pray for us.
