St Gregory VII, pope and reformer
1 candle lit
St Gregory VII was born around 1025 and was known as Hildebrand before he became pope. As a monk he had served earlier popes as counsellor and envoy. As pope he led a great reform against the buying of church offices, against clerical marriage and against rulers choosing bishops, and he clashed for years with the Emperor Henry IV. He died in exile in 1085, reportedly saying that he had loved justice and hated iniquity. His feast is May 25. Light a free candle for the Church and for those who stand by their conscience. St Gregory VII, pray for us.
