St Gregory of Narek, Monk and Poet

Gregory of Narek was an Armenian monk and poet of the tenth century. Orphaned young, he was raised by a learned uncle and educated at the monastery of Narek, where he became a monk and was ordained in 977. His best known work is the Book of Lamentations, 95 prayers that he called an encyclopedia of prayer for all nations. He was buried within the monastery walls. In 2015 Pope Francis named him a Doctor of the Church. His feast is February 27. Light a free candle for anyone who prays from a broken heart. St Gregory, pray for us.
