St Francis of Paola, Hermit and Founder
1 candle lit
Francis of Paola was born in southern Italy in 1416. He loved solitude and lived as a hermit in a cave near Paola, and before he was 20 others gathered around him. In 1492 he named his community the Minims, meaning the least, to show humility. He was known for miracles and prophecy. At Pope Sixtus IV's request he went to France to help King Louis XI prepare for death, and he died at the French court in 1507. He is a patron of sailors. His feast is April 2. Light a free candle for the humble and all who go to sea. St Francis, pray for us.
