Francis de Sales (1567 to 1622) became bishop of Geneva at 35 and kept preaching, hearing confessions and teaching children himself. His book Introduction to the Devout Life told ordinary lay people that holiness is open to everyone, not only to the clergy. Called the Gentleman Saint, he said it took him twenty years to master a quick temper, and held that a spoonful of honey attracts more flies than a barrelful of vinegar. His feast is January 24.
