St Fidelis of Sigmaringen, Capuchin Martyr
1 candle lit
Fidelis was born Mark Rey in Sigmaringen in 1577 and became a lawyer known as the poor man's lawyer. Disgusted by corruption among his colleagues, he left the law, became a priest and joined the Capuchins, taking the name Fidelis. He gave his wealth to needy seminarians and the poor. Sent to preach in Switzerland, he was killed by armed men on the road after preaching at Seewis on April 24, 1622. He was canonized in 1746. His feast is April 24. Light a free candle for lawyers and anyone who stands up for the poor. St Fidelis, pray for us.
