St Fabian, Pope and Martyr
1 candle lit
Fabian was a layman who came in from his farm just as the clergy and people of Rome were gathering to choose a new pope. The historian Eusebius tells that a dove landed on his head, and the whole assembly chose him. He led the Church for 14 years, and Saint Cyprian praised him as an incomparable man. He died a martyr in the persecution under the emperor Decius in 250. His feast is January 20. Light a free candle for anyone called to a task they never expected. St Fabian, pray for us.
