St Eusebius of Vercelli, Bishop
1 candle lit
Eusebius was the first recorded bishop of Vercelli in northern Italy. He was the first Western bishop to combine monastic life with a bishop's ministry, living in community with his clergy. In 355, at the Council of Milan, he refused to sign the condemnation of St Athanasius and asked that the Nicene Creed be signed first. The emperor Constantius sent him into exile in Syria, Cappadocia and Egypt. He came home after 362 and died around 371. His feast is August 2. Light a free candle for priests and for those who stand firm. St Eusebius, pray for us.
