St Ephrem the Syrian, Harp of the Holy Spirit
1 candle lit
St Ephrem was born around 306 in Nisibis, in Mesopotamia. He was a poet, teacher and deacon, and he never accepted ordination as a priest. When Nisibis was handed over to the Persians he fled as a refugee to Edessa. His hymns defended the faith, and he is among the first to bring song into the Church's public worship, which earned him the name Harp of the Holy Spirit. He is the only Syriac Christian who is a Doctor of the Church. He died around 373. His feast is June 9. Light a free candle for singers and musicians. St Ephrem, pray for us.
