St Elizabeth of Portugal, queen and peacemaker
1 candle lit
St Elizabeth was born in 1271, the daughter of Pedro III, the future king of Aragon, and married King Denis of Portugal at twelve. She stayed loyal to a husband whose unfaithfulness was a scandal, and worked for his conversion. She made peace between Denis and their rebellious son. She also cared for pilgrims, the sick and the poor. After Denis died she became a Franciscan tertiary and retired to a Poor Clare monastery at Coimbra. She died in 1336. Her feast is July 4. Light a free candle for peace in families. St Elizabeth, pray for us.
