St Elizabeth of Hungary was born in 1207, a daughter of King Andrew II. At fourteen she married Ludwig of Thuringia, and theirs was a deeply happy marriage. When he died of illness on his way to the crusade in 1227, she left court life, became a Secular Franciscan and founded a hospital at Marburg, where she nursed the sick and the poor with her own hands. She died there in 1231, aged only 24, and was canonized four years later. Her feast is November 17. Light a free candle for the sick and the poor. St Elizabeth of Hungary, pray for us.
