St Dominic, Founder of the Order of Preachers

Dominic was born in Old Castile, Spain, around 1170 and trained for the priesthood by a priest uncle. He became a canon at Osma. Travelling in southern France, he met the Albigensian heresy and judged that preachers who lived in comfort could not win ordinary people, so he preached in poverty. In 1215 he founded a house at Toulouse, the beginning of the Order of Preachers, or Dominicans. He died in 1221. His feast is August 8.
