St Denis, First Bishop of Paris

Denis is remembered as the first bishop of Paris. He is believed to have been sent from Rome to Gaul in the third century, and he was martyred on Montmartre around the year 258 together with his companions. He is honoured as a patron saint of France. Tradition says that after his death he carried his own head to a village northeast of Paris, and that St Genevieve later built a basilica over his tomb. His feast is October 9. Light a free candle for France and for all who carry the faith to a new land. St Denis, pray for us.
