Damasus was born in 304 and served in Rome as a priest before becoming its bishop, the pope. He defended the faith against heresies such as Arianism and made Latin the main language of the Church's liturgy. He encouraged St Jerome in the biblical work that led to the Vulgate, the Latin Bible used for centuries. He died on 11 December 384. His feast is December 11.
