St Cyril of Alexandria, defender of the God-bearer
1 candle lit
St Cyril lived from 378 to 444 and was archbishop of Alexandria in Egypt. He opposed Nestorius, who taught that Christ was two separate persons. At the Council of Ephesus in 431, with the pope's authority, he helped condemn that teaching and affirm that Mary is the God-bearer. He was not a perfect man: early in his career he could act impulsively and even violently, and he once spent three months in prison after being deposed. His feast is June 27. Light a free candle for those who teach the faith. St Cyril, pray for us.
