St Catherine of Alexandria
1 candle lit
Catherine is honoured as a virgin and martyr who died around the year 310. Tradition says she converted after a vision, debated fifty pagan philosophers at the age of eighteen, and that a spiked wheel shattered when she touched it. Her body is said to rest in a monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai. Devotion to her grew after the Crusades, and she is the patron of students, teachers, librarians, lawyers and philosophers. Her feast is November 25. Light a free candle for students and anyone who is studying. St Catherine, pray for us.
