St Camillus de Lellis, Friend of the Sick
1 candle lit
Camillus de Lellis was born in Italy in 1550 and became a soldier. After gambling away everything he owned, he found work at a hospital in Rome, and there his life changed. He was ordained a priest in 1584 and founded a congregation, the Ministers of the Sick, whose members wore a red cross on the cassock. In 1595 his followers served wounded soldiers on campaign in Hungary and Croatia. He died in 1614. His feast is July 14. Light a free candle for the sick and for the nurses and doctors who care for them. St Camillus, pray for us.
