St Callistus I, Pope and Martyr
1 candle lit
Callistus was pope in Rome from about 218 and died around 223. A hostile early account says he began as a slave, was sent to the mines of Sardinia as a Christian, and was later freed and rose to be archdeacon and then pope. He allowed Communion after penance for serious sin, so that sinners could return. Early Roman records honour him as a martyr, and he was buried on the Aurelian Way. The Catacomb of St Callistus now bears his name. His feast is October 14. Light a free candle for anyone seeking a second chance. St Callistus, pray for us.
