St Bruno of Cologne
1 candle lit
Bruno was born in Cologne around 1030 and became a respected teacher at Rheims. He once backed Pope Gregory VII against corruption among the clergy, and his house was plundered for it. He then turned to a life of silence and founded the Carthusians at the Chartreuse, an order of monks known for solitude, prayer and penance. He died in the wilderness of Calabria, in southern Italy, in 1101. His feast is October 6. Light a free candle for anyone who longs for quiet and prayer. St Bruno, pray for us.
