St Boniface, Apostle of the Germans
1 candle lit
Boniface was an English Benedictine monk, born around 675. He turned down election as an abbot so that he could take the Gospel to the Germanic peoples, and in 719 he went at the request of Pope Gregory II. He became a bishop, reformed the Church in Germany, and founded many monasteries. In 754 he and 53 companions were killed by a crowd in Frisia while he was preparing converts for confirmation. He is the patron saint of Germany. His feast is June 5. Light a free candle for missionaries and anyone far from home. St Boniface, pray for us.
