St Bernardine of Siena, preacher of the Holy Name
1 candle lit
St Bernardine was born in Siena in 1380. At twenty, during a plague, he volunteered to run a hospital and nursed the sick for four months. He became a Franciscan friar and the greatest preacher of his time, travelling across Italy, calming quarrels between cities. He spread devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus and made the IHS symbol known. His order grew from 300 to 4,000 friars under his leadership. He died in 1444 while travelling. His feast is May 20. Light a free candle for peace in a divided place. St Bernardine, pray for us.
