St Bernard of Clairvaux, Abbot and Doctor
1 candle lit
Bernard was born in 1090 near Dijon in France. He entered the monastery of Cîteaux, and five of his brothers, two uncles and about thirty friends followed him. Within a few years he was abbot of a new house at Clairvaux. He advised popes and preached the Second Crusade, and felt responsible when it failed. His sermons and writings on Mary shaped Catholic thought. He died in 1153 and was named a Doctor of the Church. His feast is August 20. Light a free candle for monks and for anyone who seeks God in quiet prayer. St Bernard, pray for us.
