St Benedict, Patriarch of Western Monks

1 candle lit

Benedict was born into a distinguished family in central Italy around 480. He spent three years as a hermit in a mountain cave, then founded Monte Cassino, one of the most famous monasteries in the world. His Rule, built on prayer, study, manual work and shared life under an abbot, came to guide Western monasticism, though some of his first monks found his strictness hard to accept. His feast is July 11. Light a free candle for monks and nuns and anyone who longs for a quiet, ordered life. St Benedict, pray for us.
