St Barnabas the Apostle

1 candle lit

Barnabas was a Jew from Cyprus, called Barnabas by the apostles, a name that means 'son of encouragement'. When the Church in Jerusalem feared Saul, the former persecutor, Barnabas brought him to Peter and the other apostles. Sent to Antioch, he taught there for a year with Paul, and the two were then sent on the first mission to the Gentiles. They later parted over whether to take his cousin John Mark, but were reconciled. He is patron saint of Cyprus. His feast is June 11. Light a free candle for peacemakers. St Barnabas, pray for us.
