St Augustine Zhao Rong and the Martyrs of China
1 candle lit
Augustine Zhao Rong was a Chinese soldier assigned to escort the captive Bishop Dufresse to Beijing. Moved by the bishop's patience, he asked to be baptised, and he later became a priest. Arrested in a new persecution, he refused to give up his faith and died in prison in the winter of 1815. Pope John Paul II canonised him on 1 October 2000 together with 119 other martyrs of China, who died between 1648 and 1930. Their feast is July 9. Light a free candle for Christians in China. Sts Augustine Zhao Rong and companions, pray for us.
