St Augustine of Canterbury, apostle of England
1 candle lit
St Augustine of Canterbury was prior of a monastery in Rome when Pope Gregory the Great sent him, in 596, with about 40 monks to bring the faith to the Anglo-Saxons. Frightened by tales of the people and the sea, he turned back, and Gregory had to reassure him before he set out again. King Ethelbert was baptized in 597, and Augustine founded the see of Canterbury. He died in 605 and is called the Apostle of England. His feast is May 27. Light a free candle for England and for anyone who starts something that frightens them. St Augustine, pray for us.
