1 candle lit

Athanasius was born in Alexandria, Egypt, around 296 and later became its bishop. He spent his life defending the belief that Jesus Christ is truly God, against the teaching of Arius, and for it he was sent into exile five times. He also wrote the Life of St Anthony, a popular book that helped spread monastic life in the Western Church. He died in 373 and is a Doctor of the Church. His feast is May 2.
