St Apollinaris of Ravenna, Bishop and Martyr
1 candle lit
Apollinaris is remembered as the first bishop of Ravenna in Italy. Tradition says St Peter sent him there to preach. The Catholic Encyclopedia holds it certain that he was Ravenna's first bishop and that he died as a martyr, though the old account of his life has little historical value. He died of a beating received near Classis, the port of Ravenna. The great basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, consecrated in 549, still holds his body. His feast is July 20. Light a free candle for bishops and missionaries. St Apollinaris, pray for us.
