St Anthony the Abbot

Anthony (251 to 356) was born in Egypt. Around the age of twenty he heard the Gospel words "sell what you have" and gave away a large inheritance. He spent most of his long life in solitude, yet so many people came for his advice that he gathered scattered cells of hermits into a loose community, a kind of early monastery. At 88 he spoke out against the Arian heresy. Tradition says he lived to 105. His feast is January 17. Light a free candle for anyone who longs for quiet. St Anthony, pray for us.
