St Ansgar, Apostle of the North
1 candle lit
Ansgar was born around 801 and became a Benedictine monk at Corbie in France. He is called the Apostle of the North because he carried the Gospel to Denmark and Sweden as bishop of Hamburg and papal legate. When invading Northmen burned Hamburg, both lands slipped back into paganism, yet he went back, helped win another Danish king and saw missionaries return to Sweden. He had hoped to be a martyr but died peacefully at Bremen in 865. His feast is February 3. Light a free candle for anyone beginning again after a setback. St Ansgar, pray for us.
