For a special intention
St Angela Merici, Founder of the Ursulines
1 candle lit
Angela Merici was born in 1474 in Desenzano in northern Italy and was orphaned as a teenager. She lived in nearby Brescia and joined the Third Order of St Francis. Tradition says she lost her sight on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and regained it praying before a crucifix on the way home. At about 60 she founded the Company of St Ursula with other women who served in the world. Her followers, the Ursulines, taught girls. She died in 1540. Her feast is January 27. Light a free candle for teachers and every child who is learning. St Angela, pray for us.
