St Alphonsus Liguori, Bishop and Doctor

Alphonsus was born in 1696 near Naples and earned a doctorate in law at sixteen. He left the courts to serve the poor, and in 1732 he founded the Redemptorists. He tried to decline the honour, yet became a bishop at 66 and reformed his diocese. His writing helped confessors and pastors turn from harsh rigidity toward gentleness and common sense. He died in 1787 and was named a Doctor of the Church in 1871. His feast is August 1. Light a free candle for confessors, theologians and anyone who needs to trust God's mercy.
