St Agatha of Sicily

1 candle lit

Agatha was a young woman of Sicily who died as a martyr in 251, in the persecution under the Emperor Decius. Almost nothing about her is historically certain. Tradition says she was arrested as a Christian and tortured, and stayed faithful to the end. The year after her death, the stilling of an eruption of Mount Etna was credited to her prayers, so people have long asked for her help against fire. She is patron of Palermo and Catania, and of nurses. Her feast is February 5. Light a free candle for anyone who nurses the sick. St Agatha, pray for us.
